My first job out of design school was working for a large screen printer in Christchurch. This was not the job I had hoped for but after many applications and rejections I was more than happy to start my career. While the job had its ups and downs the people I worked with were a laugh and taught me a lot about screen printing and life in general.
My love for screen printing had started a couple of years earlier at design school. We were lucky to have access to the local Art Schools equipment and this taught us to appreciate the imperfections of screen printing. Screen printing is messy, time consuming and at times very frustrating. But this method creates character and can give soul that inkjet printers could never replicate.
South West
Over the past couple of years I have been fortunate to visit the south western state of Arizona. This is the home of the classic western backdrop with its red dirt, buttes and cactus. With this inspiration I created the South West limited edition screen prints.
Mt Maunganui
Mt Maunganui is an icon of the Bay of Plenty. Tourists from all over the world travel to the Mount to walk on the golden sands, climb the Mauao (the name of the mountain) and explore the township. With this inspiration I created the Mt Maunganui limited edition screen prints.
Flamingo
The flamingo was loosely inspired by a trip to Las Vegas and a visit to the infamous Flamingo casino. This combined with an interest in WW1 Razzle-dazzel, a geometric pattern developed for warships to mislead the enemy.
Matariki the Wellington whale
In July 2018 Wellington received a special visit from a southern right whale. This visit delayed the annual Matariki fireworks display hence many giving the whale the nickname; Matariki the Wellington whale.
Hottie
I was visting a friend many years ago and noticed they had a hottie hanging on the back of a door. What intriged me was its raised diagonal lines and soft curved shape. This captured my attention and a few years later I decided to make this icon a print.
